Ingrams/Bench Families - Warwickshire to United States

Welcome,
This site is about providing information about the older ancestors of Edward Ingram / Elizabeth Bench.
The English Ingram and Bench families both ended up migrating to the United States, and their respective families are well documented just prior to their migration. However their are many unknowns with the older Ingram and Bench families, some of which may never be uncovered.

I have briefly covered my Bench and Ingram family branches, as follows:

With regard to my Ingram family branch, the oldest known documented ancestor known is Thomas Ingram who died in 1817 in Long Lawford, and was buried 17 September 1817 in Newbold-Upon-Avon, which is located in Warwickshire, England. He was born circa 1731 (according to his burial record).  This Thomas Ingram married twice, the first marriage to Elizabeth Essex on 17 October 1760 in Newbold-Upon-Avon. Elizabeth died in 1763 and was buried on 18 November 1763 in Newbold-Upon-Avon.  He next married to Ann Checkland (alias Liggins in some family records) on 12 May 1766 in Newbold-Upon-Avon.

Records of my own family which were originally provided in the 1970's to my father William Ingram by his aunt Glady's Donetta (Ingram) Brown, who noted our family as far back as a Sampson Ingram, christened on 31 August 1592 in Wolgarstone, Penkridge, Staffordshire, England.  Great Aunt Glady's was from Nephi, Utah, and utilized the many resources of the LDS genealogy center in Salt Lake City, Utah to obtain information on our family.  Members of the family also visited the areas of Warwickshire that our family lived in.  This is perhaps where the insight to our family was provided, but to my knowledge, not documented.

The dilemma is that there are no known existing records within our family to prove that Sampson Ingram was indeed the progenitor of our Ingram family. The Ingram's of Staffordshire (and later Shropshire) are fairly well documented.  I have kept our oldest known family member, Thomas Ingram, of Warwickshire linked to the Staffordshire/Shropshire Ingram's, as he actually fits with the only known Thomas Ingram's in these places that matches our Thomas Ingram's estimated year of birth in 1731.  If this indeed is our Thomas Ingram, he was actually baptized 13 May 1733 in Heathhill, Sherriff-Hales, Shropshire, England.

It is also possible since our 2nd great grandmother, Ann (Smith) Ingram, who was born 1819 in Little Wigston, Leicestershire died 11 March 1912 in Nephi, Utah provided much of the Ingram information, and was not officially recorded, only verbally passed down.

I have further placed these Ingram's of Staffordshire/Shropshire back un-officially to Henrico Ingeram, born circa 1240, who was of Carkedon, Worcestershire, England. With a lack of records, we may never know exactly who our Ingram families were connected to, but John Ingram/Elizabeth Preston are Sampson Ingram's parents, and the rest of this family is "best guess", based on the limited availability of records.

With regard to my Bench family branch, the oldest known documented ancester is Thomas Bench (The Elder), who is estimated to be born ca 1500, and was of Lillington, Warwickshire, England. His marriage date is unknown, and his wife is only known in husband Thomas Bench's 1565 probate record as Elizabeth.

Thomas Bench (The Elder) named his son Phillip Bench in his will, and also named Phillip's son as Thomas Bench (The Younger).

The 1565 baptism record of Thomas Bench (The Younger) also mentioned his father as Phillip and mother as Joane.

In baptism records of the children of  Thomas Bench (the younger), his wife is simply noted as Dorothy.

William Bench was likely a brother of Phillip Bench, and the elder William Bench died in 1560, and thus was not named in the will of father Thomas Bench (The Elder) in 1565. Another William Bench died in 1565, and this William Bench is presumed to be the son of Phillip Bench. It is to be noted that some branches of this family ended up in Southam, Warwickshire (about 8 miles away), and in the 1660's, records are found in Saint Nicholas parish, about 4 miles away from Lillington in the town of Kenilworth.
